POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
In a strong stance against the proposed imposition of Governor's Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, both the Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamaat-e-Islami have expressed their opposition, calling it an unconstitutional move.
ANP's central spokesperson, Engineer Ehsanullah Khan, stated in an interview with Geo News that the party opposes the imposition of Governor’s Rule, stating that it would not resolve the province’s issues. Khan pointed out that even if Governor's Rule is imposed, it would only last for three months and would have no lasting impact given PTI’s majority in the provincial assembly. The ANP leader emphasized the need for meaningful dialogue between the federal government and PTI, adding that political instability in the country has reached alarming levels.
Similarly, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Central Ameer for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abdul Wase, condemned the proposed move, calling it unconstitutional. He criticized the federal government for considering Governor’s Rule in the presence of a functioning provincial assembly, labeling it a "malicious act" that Jamaat-e-Islami would strongly oppose. Wase dismissed the statements by Amir Muqam regarding Governor’s Rule as irresponsible and claimed that the rule has no legal basis when an elected government is in place.
While opposition parties are firm in their stance, government sources confirm that a majority of the federal cabinet has shown support for imposing Governor’s Rule. However, the final decision will come after consultations with political parties, including the PPP, Qaumi Watan Party, and ANP.
Sources also highlighted that the Law Ministry and Attorney General have provided legal opinions, and that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has justified the need for Governor’s Rule due to alleged attacks on the federation by local forces.
The federal cabinet, in its recent meeting, discussed this issue, with the final decision expected once political stakeholders are fully consulted.
