Canadian PM Mark Carney Apologizes to Trump, Orders Withdrawal of Anti-Tariff Ad

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed on Saturday that he had personally apologized to U.S. President Donald Trump for a controversial political advertisement criticizing tariffs, and had instructed Ontario Premier Doug Ford not to air it.

Speaking to reporters after attending the Asia-Pacific Summit in South Korea, Carney said the apology was delivered privately during a dinner hosted by the South Korean president, where both leaders were present.

Carney explained that he had viewed the advertisement with Ford prior to its release and expressed his opposition. The ad featured a quote from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, warning that tariffs “lead to trade wars and economic destruction.”

The ad sparked a sharp response from President Trump, who subsequently announced increased tariffs on Canadian goods and suspended ongoing trade negotiations with Ottawa.

Carney said he was working to improve bilateral relations through diplomatic engagement, including talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that the visit aimed to diversify Canada’s economic dependencies away from the United States.

“It won’t happen immediately, but we are moving very quickly,” Carney stated.

The controversial advertisement was produced under the direction of Doug Ford, the conservative Premier of Ontario, who is frequently compared to Trump for his populist political style.

Carney described his meeting with President Xi as a “turning point” in Canada-China relations, noting that both sides discussed sensitive issues such as foreign interference and agreed on the need for greater cooperation amid global trade tensions.

Canada’s relations with China have long been strained among Western nations, particularly due to disputes over technology and security concerns. However, both countries now face economic pressure from Trump’s tariff policies, even as Xi and Trump recently agreed to de-escalate trade tensions during their meeting on Thursday.

Carney’s diplomatic outreach reflects a broader effort to stabilize Canada’s trade landscape while navigating challenges posed by both Washington and Beijing in an increasingly polarized global economy.
