European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas reaffirmed the United States as Europe’s “biggest ally” during remarks at the Doha Forum on Saturday, despite recent criticism of the continent in a major US National Security Strategy document.
The document had warned Europe of lacking “self-confidence” and facing potential “civilizational erasure” — claims widely dismissed but acknowledged by Kallas as partly valid. She emphasized that the EU and US should remain united.
“I think we haven’t always seen eye to eye on different topics, but I think the overall principle is still there. We are the biggest allies,” Kallas said. She added that the US should aim to help Europe “correct its current trajectory.”
The remarks come amid ongoing ceasefire talks in the Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s invasion in 2022. The US has led efforts to mediate, including a controversial plan proposed by former President Donald Trump, suggesting Ukraine cede certain territories to Russia in exchange for security guarantees — a proposal Kyiv has pushed to revise.
Kallas warned against placing excessive limitations on Ukraine, saying, “If aggression is rewarded, we will see it happen again, and not only in Ukraine or Gaza, but all around the world.”
She also urged Europe to recognize its own strength, stating that the continent has underestimated its power, especially in dealings with Russia. “Towards Russia, for example… we should be more self-confident,” Kallas noted.
As talks continue between Washington and Kyiv, European leaders like Kallas stress the importance of a united transatlantic front, both to maintain pressure on aggressors and to prevent global escalation.
