Fazlur Rehman Warns PTI Against Politicising 26th Amendment, Announces Gaza Conference

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was aligned with his party until the final stages before the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, urging PTI not to politicise or seek political mileage from the matter.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar, the veteran political leader announced that a historic Mufti Mahmud Conference will be held in Dera Ismail Khan on October 16, where full solidarity will be expressed with the oppressed people of Gaza.

“Atrocities have been committed against the people of Gaza. Over 70,000 unarmed children, women, and elderly have been martyred. Our conference will show complete solidarity with the people of Gaza,” Maulana Fazl said.

Turning to domestic politics, Fazlur Rehman emphasised that every Pakistani has the right to challenge the 26th Amendment in court, but political point-scoring over the issue was irresponsible.

“People have gone to court against the 26th Amendment — that is their constitutional right. PTI was with us until the last seats before the 26th Amendment. We are serious political people. PTI should not score points over this issue,” he remarked.

The JUI-F chief clarified that the amendment included both the removal and addition of several clauses, stating that political parties should adopt a realistic approach instead of engaging in reactionary politics.

“One should always talk realistically. PTI cannot claim that it stands with the judiciary just for political optics. We have made changes in the 26th Amendment after careful consideration,” he said.

Discussing the broader political situation, Fazlur Rehman alleged that his party’s mandate had been stolen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, describing the governance and security situation in both provinces as alarming.

“Our mandate has been stolen in KP and Balochistan. Insecurity and corruption are at their peak in these provinces. No one is in a position to talk about changing the Chief Minister yet,” he added.

The JUI-F chief’s remarks come amid ongoing national debate over the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which has reshaped the judiciary’s structure and powers, and ongoing tensions between political parties regarding governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

With the Mufti Mahmud Conference scheduled for next week, the JUI-F appears to be positioning itself both as a voice of political moderation and as a representative of the global Muslim community’s concerns, particularly regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
