Govt Says Imran Khan “Safe” Amid PTI Protests in Senate

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry on Friday assured lawmakers that PTI founder Imran Khan is “fine” and faces “no danger,” following rising political tensions and PTI protests in the Senate over their party leaders being barred from meeting the former prime minister.

Speaking on the Senate floor, the minister said he had personally contacted the superintendent of Adiala Jail. “Imran Khan is fine and there is no danger to him,” he stated, rejecting social media claims about deteriorating health or threats to Imran’s life.

Tariq Fazal added that rumours about Imran Khan’s condition were being fuelled from outside Pakistan. “All such claims have been amplified by Indian media. These reports are false and based on lies,” he said.

PTI Protests and Heated Exchanges

Earlier in the session, PTI senators staged a strong protest over being denied meetings with Imran Khan for weeks. A heated exchange took place between government and opposition benches, culminating in PTI lawmakers walking out of the Senate hall.

PTI parliamentary leader Senator Ali Zafar said the government had failed to answer their question regarding Imran’s wellbeing. “Public anxiety has increased greatly,” he said, adding that the party sought only a clear confirmation from the government and access to their leader.

PTI Senator Zeeshan Khanzada demanded clarity on who, if anyone, had been allowed to meet Imran Khan in the past three weeks. “If you do not allow him to meet, we will not allow the meeting (Senate session) to proceed,” he warned.

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani intervened, saying, “You cannot threaten that you will not allow the meeting to proceed,” urging PTI lawmakers to follow parliamentary norms.

Quorum Issue and Resumption

The session was temporarily adjourned for 30 minutes after a lack of quorum was pointed out.

When proceedings resumed, PTI senators again rose in protest, chanting slogans demanding immediate access to Imran Khan. The disruption reflected the party’s escalating pressure campaign over what it calls a violation of Imran’s legal visitation rights.

Background

The confrontation in the Senate comes amid mounting tensions between PTI and government authorities over access to the former prime minister, who has been imprisoned in Adiala Jail since 2023. PTI leaders claim that meetings with Imran — including by family, lawyers, and party leadership — have been blocked for nearly a month, prompting sit-ins, petitions, and growing public concern.

Meanwhile, the government insists Imran Khan is in good health and safe, accusing PTI of spreading unnecessary panic for political mileage.
