Justice Aminuddin Khan Sworn in as First Chief Justice of Constitutional Court

Justice Aminuddin Khan was sworn in on Friday as the first Chief Justice of Pakistan’s newly formed Federal Constitutional Court. The oath was administered by President Asif Ali Zardari, with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Yahya Afridi, federal ministers, and top military officials in attendance.

The ceremony also saw the presence of Field Marshal Asim Munir, the heads of the Pakistan Navy and Air Force, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan.

Role of the Constitutional Court

As Chief Justice, Justice Aminuddin will oversee all cases pertaining to constitutional matters, marking a key step in the implementation of the recently enacted 27th Constitutional Amendment. Six judges of the Constitutional Court will take their oaths from Chief Justice Aminuddin in a separate ceremony arranged at the Islamabad High Court.

A Brief Look at Justice Aminuddin’s Career

·       Education & Early Career: Justice Aminuddin completed his LLB from University Law College, Multan in 1984 and began practicing law in 1985.

·       Lahore High Court: Became an advocate in 1987, handling thousands of civil cases at Bahawalpur, Multan, and Lahore benches; served as a member of university syndicates.

·       Supreme Court: Admitted as a Supreme Court advocate in 2001 and appointed as a Supreme Court judge on October 21, 2019.

·       Constitutional Bench: Previously served as the first head of the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench.

Justice Aminuddin’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court was approved by President Zardari on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The Chief Justice will administer the oath to six judges of the court in a formal ceremony held at the Islamabad High Court, in a specially arranged open area between the judges’ chambers and the administration block.

This historic appointment marks the operational launch of the Federal Constitutional Court, which will exclusively hear constitutional matters, further shaping Pakistan’s judicial landscape.
