Prosecutors Seek Over 2,000-Year Sentence for Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu

Turkish prosecutors have demanded a prison sentence exceeding 2,000 years for Istanbul’s opposition mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, accusing him of heading a massive corruption network that allegedly cost the state billions of liras.

At a press conference, Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Akan Görlek revealed that the 4,000-page indictment names 402 defendants, including İmamoğlu. The accused face charges of forming a criminal organization, bribery, fraud, and tender rigging.

According to the prosecution, the alleged corruption network has resulted in losses of 160 billion Turkish liras (approximately $3.8 billion) to the state.

İmamoğlu’s Response and Political Reactions

İmamoğlu has denounced the charges as political revenge, arguing that the case is an attempt to undermine him. His party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), also condemned the indictment, calling it baseless and ridiculous.

The mayor has been under investigation since March 2025, following corruption allegations that his critics say are politically motivated.

Context

The indictment comes amid growing political tensions in Turkey ahead of upcoming elections, with opposition figures alleging that the ruling authorities are using the judiciary to target political rivals. İmamoğlu has remained a prominent opposition figure, particularly noted for his leadership in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city.
