WORLD NEWS
Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile attack overnight, damaging power facilities in eight Ukrainian regions and forcing nuclear power plants to reduce output, officials and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Saturday.
The assault comes as the war approaches its fourth anniversary and winter deepens, with Russia increasingly targeting Ukraine’s energy sector and key infrastructure.
Ukraine operates three nuclear power plants supplying over half the country’s electricity. The IAEA confirmed that production was reduced due to “widespread military activities overnight.”
The Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched 653 drones and 51 missiles, of which Ukrainian forces intercepted 585 drones and 30 missiles.
Power and heat generation facilities in Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions were struck. In the southern Odesa region, 9,500 customers were left without heat and 34,000 without water. Port infrastructure in Odesa was also damaged, with operators switching to backup generators.
Emergency repairs are underway wherever safety conditions allow, according to Ukraine’s energy ministry.
Railway and Transport Attacks
A railway hub near Kyiv, including depots and carriages in Fastiv, was also hit, causing the cancellation of several suburban trains near Kyiv and Chernihiv, though no casualties were reported.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strikes as attacks on critical civilian infrastructure and called for swift international action to strengthen Ukraine and pressure Russia.
Russian Defense Ministry Statement
Russia claimed the overnight strike targeted military-industrial enterprises, energy facilities supporting operations, and port infrastructure used for military purposes. The strike included high-precision, long-range weapons, such as Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and long-range drones.
Impact Beyond Ukraine
Sirens sounded in Lubartow, Lublin, Poland, early Saturday, prompting Polish jets to scramble, though no airspace violations occurred, according to the Polish Armed Forces.
The attacks follow unsuccessful U.S.-brokered peace talks this week, highlighting ongoing instability and escalating winter-time risks to civilians.
