Supreme Judicial Council Dismisses 70 of 74 Complaints Against Judges, Moves Forward on 3

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has dismissed 70 out of 74 complaints filed against various judges, while three complaints were accepted for further action and one was postponed.

The meeting of the council was held under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, during which members also approved amendments to the code of conduct for judges by a majority vote.

Two separate meetings were convened. The first session was attended by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Alia Neelam, and Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar.

According to the official statement, 67 complaints were reviewed under Article 209 of the Constitution, out of which 65 were unanimously dismissed, one was postponed, and one was approved for further action by a majority vote.

Due to the non-participation of the Islamabad High Court Chief Justice, the council was reconstituted, and in the second meeting, the Peshawar High Court Chief Justice participated in his place.

In the second session, seven complaints were taken up, with the council deciding by majority to proceed further on two and close five.

The announcement further revealed that 155 complaints have been reviewed since October 2024, with 87 complaints still pending for initial consideration after the recent decisions.

The SJC’s approval of amendments to the judicial code of conduct marks a significant development in Pakistan’s efforts to enhance accountability and transparency within the judiciary.
