Internet services provided by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) faced a major disruption across the country on Wednesday, affecting users nationwide. PTCL spokesperson Amir Pasha confirmed to Dawn.com that a data outage in various cities had impacted connectivity.
“Our teams are actively working to resolve and rectify the issue at the earliest,” Pasha stated.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) spokesperson Malahat Obaid attributed the disruption to a “fault in the PTCL system,” and warned that internet and broadband users might experience degraded services during peak hours.
Obaid assured that teams were diligently working to fix the fault, while the PTA monitored the situation to ensure services returned to normal.
Dr. Shahid Farooq Alvi, president of the Pakistan Telecommunication Access Provider Association (PTAPA), confirmed the widespread impact, noting that PTCL provides 70% of the internet services in the country.
“Companies were also not informed about when the system would start providing internet,” Alvi added.
Global internet monitor Netblocks reported a nation-scale disruption, with national connectivity dropping to 24% of ordinary levels. Downdetector, which tracks outages, showed a significant spike in reported outages of PTCL services from around 1:30 pm onwards, with the majority of complaints coming from major cities like Karachi, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan.
The disruption follows a similar incident in April, where internet services were briefly interrupted due to a technical issue.
