General Election 2024: security concerns and mismanagement by ECP raises fairness doubts

The delay in announcing the election results in Pakistan, attributed to an overemphasis on security, mismanagement by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and a last-minute decision by the caretaker government to suspend mobile phone services, has raised concerns about the fairness of the elections, reminiscent of the 2018 Result Transmission System (RTS) controversy.

Election experts and civil society representatives argue that the Election Management System (EMS) cannot be blamed, as it was never used due to the lack of internet.

The additional features of EMS, including manual submission of results by presiding officers, could have mitigated the situation, but the government's unilateral decision hindered the process, leading to administrative weakness and a chaotic outcome.
