Pervez Musharraf, the former military ruler, has died.


Former President General Pervez Musharraf died on Sunday in Dubai after a long battle with the rare disease amyloidosis. He was 79.

The news was confirmed by Shazia Siraj, spokesperson for Pakistan's consulate in Dubai and embassy in Abu Dhabi. "I can confirm he died this morning," she told Reuters.

According to Geo News, a special flight will be chartered to Dubai on Monday to transport Musharraf's body back to Pakistan for burial.

Meanwhile, according to a Khaleej Times report, the Consulate General of Pakistan in Dubai has issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) in order for Musharraf's family to repatriate his body to Pakistan.

 

"We are in contact with the family, and the consulate will assist in any way it can; the consulate has issued the no objection certificate," Consul-General Hassan Afzal Khan was quoted as saying in the report.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement issued immediately after Musharraf's death that Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad and all service chiefs expressed their heartfelt condolences.

 

"May Allah bless the departed soul and strengthen the bereaved family," said the military's media wing.
