The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed the deaths of 12 Indian soldiers serving as mercenaries in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In a statement on Friday, the MEA also disclosed that 16 soldiers are currently unaccounted for, while efforts are underway to gather further details from Russian authorities.

Casualty and Missing Soldiers

Speaking at a press conference, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed that 126 Indian soldiers had been identified as serving in the Russian Armed Forces during the conflict. Of these, 96 have been discharged, while 18 remain active. The whereabouts of 16 soldiers remain unknown, with Russia officially listing them as missing.

"Russia has declared 16 soldiers missing, and we are in touch with their government to expedite their release and safe return," said Jaiswal. He further added that 12 soldiers had been killed in action.

Individual Cases Highlight Tragedy

The announcement comes after the recent death of Bunel Babu, a soldier from Kerala, who was reportedly killed in Ukraine while serving for Russia. Another individual from Kerala sustained injuries in the conflict. The Indian Embassy in Moscow is coordinating with Russian authorities to repatriate Babu’s body.

India’s Response

The MEA’s acknowledgment underscores the complex dynamics of Indian nationals participating in foreign conflicts. While the ministry has emphasized that these individuals were not officially representing India, the government has pledged to assist in repatriating bodies and locating the missing soldiers.

Broader Implications

This incident raises questions about the increasing trend of Indian nationals joining foreign militaries or private groups, particularly in high-stakes conflicts. Analysts suggest that economic factors or ideological motivations may play a role in such decisions.

The Russia-Ukraine war continues to claim lives on both sides, and with Indian citizens caught in the crossfire, the situation underscores the far-reaching impacts of the conflict.
