12 teachers from Punjab University have absconded after receiving scholarships worth crores of rupees meant for higher education abroad. The university has now decided to write to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to initiate legal action and recover the funds.
According to Punjab University officials, a total of 56 teachers received generous funding to pursue PhDs abroad. As per the official agreement, each recipient was required to serve at Punjab University for at least five years upon returning.
However, 12 of these teachers never reported back after completing their degrees. Among them, 7 were funded by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), while 5 were awarded scholarships directly by the university.
The university is also preparing to write to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior to block the Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) and passports of the absconding faculty members.
“They were bound by contract to serve the university or repay the scholarship amounts. Legal action will now be taken,” said a university spokesperson.
