A new report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has revealed that the Afghan Taliban allegedly sold or smuggled 500,000 weapons left behind by the US military after the 2021 withdrawal. According to the report, these weapons found their way into the hands of various terrorist organizations, including those affiliated with Al-Qaeda.
The United Nations also confirmed that weapons originally provided to the Afghan military by the US have been circulated to groups linked to Al-Qaeda. The Taliban has admitted to being unable to account for at least half of the military equipment left in Afghanistan after they took control of the country in 2021.
Sources within the UN Security Council claim that about 500,000 pieces of military equipment remain unaccounted for. The Taliban's 2021 capture of an estimated one million weapons, including firearms, artillery, and military vehicles, has raised concerns about the potential misuse of these arms by terrorist organizations worldwide.
The Taliban's actions further complicate global efforts to limit the spread of military-grade weapons to non-state actors. The US, which previously allocated $85 billion in military aid to Afghanistan, had hoped that these weapons would help stabilize the country, but the rapid collapse of the Afghan government left much of the equipment vulnerable to exploitation.
The report has drawn attention to the significant international security risks posed by the illicit flow of weapons and has prompted calls for greater oversight of the Taliban’s military assets.
