Ahmed Khan Bhachar Removed as Punjab Opposition Leader

The Punjab Assembly Secretariat has officially removed Ahmed Khan Bhachar, a prominent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker, from his position as Leader of the Opposition, days after his conviction in a May 9-related case.

According to Geo News, the notification was issued after Bhachar was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Anti-Terrorism Court, which found him and other PTI leaders guilty of involvement in violent attacks on sensitive government installations.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) also disqualified Bhachar from holding public office, effectively ending his tenure as a Member of the Provincial Assembly from PP-87 Mianwali.

Background:

Bhachar was among several high-profile PTI leaders — including Ahmed Chatha, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, and Mian Mahmood-ur-Rasheed — convicted and sentenced in the high-profile May 9 riots case. The court held them responsible for inciting violence and damaging state property following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2023.

Ahmed Chatha, who was elected from NA-66 Wazirabad, was also disqualified by the ECP.

Implications:

The removal of Bhachar further destabilizes PTI’s position in Punjab, where the party has faced severe political and legal setbacks following the May 9 incidents. With key figures either imprisoned, disqualified, or in hiding, the party is struggling to maintain its parliamentary presence and leadership in the province.

This latest development also paves the way for the nomination of a new Opposition Leader, with several names reportedly under consideration from PTI’s remaining parliamentary group.
