TRADE & ECONOMY

Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, addressed a reception by the Pakistani business community in Jeddah, where he spoke on the future of Pakistan’s economy. He highlighted the challenges the country has faced and outlined a vision for its growth and development.
Three Flights Crashed, Fourth Flight Will Safeguard the Nation
Iqbal spoke candidly about the instability that has plagued the country, saying that three flights of Pakistan have "crashed" due to political and economic turbulence. However, he assured the audience that the fourth flight—a reference to the nation’s economic recovery—will protect Pakistan's future and ensure no further crashes occur. He emphasized that there is "no room for further instability."
Udan Pakistan Program
The Udan Pakistan initiative was also discussed, with Iqbal describing it as a program that provides a "sustainable and long-lasting foundation" for the nation’s development. He expressed confidence that economic relations would serve as the cornerstone for strengthening ties between Pakistan and other nations.
Iqbal underscored the importance of exports in this agenda, explaining that economic independence hinges on the country's ability to generate foreign currency through global trade.
Shift to Economic Long March
The Federal Minister advocated for a shift from political long marches to an economic long march. He stressed that unity, solidarity, and collective effort are necessary for the country to break free from the political instability that has hampered its progress.
The Role of Overseas Pakistanis
Iqbal hailed overseas Pakistanis as the country’s best asset, recognizing their crucial role in supporting Pakistan’s economy. He urged the local community to help increase trade relations with Saudi Arabia, furthering the economic ties between the two nations.
Technological Advancement and Research
Iqbal also pointed out that Muslims have lagged behind in research and technology, a gap that has consequences for global competitiveness. He emphasized the importance of aligning the country’s economy with modern technology through initiatives like Udan Pakistan, which aims to bridge the technological divide.
National Unity and Balochistan’s Development
Highlighting the need for national unity, Iqbal also discussed the mineral development projects in Balochistan, which have sparked both opportunities and resistance. He assured that Balochistan would emerge as Pakistan’s most prosperous province once these projects come to fruition.
Future Vision: A Trillion Dollar Economy
Iqbal concluded his speech by reiterating the government’s vision of making Pakistan a trillion-dollar economy by 2035. He stressed that unity, honesty, and hard work would be key to realizing this ambitious goal, with every Pakistani playing a part in shaping the future of the nation.
