POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Aleema Khan, the sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, disclosed that a proposal for her brother's house arrest at Bani Gala had been made, with former federal minister Ali Amin Gandapur reportedly bringing the offer. This development comes amid ongoing discussions about a possible political settlement between the PTI and the government.
Aleema Khan, speaking after visiting Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, emphasized that her brother has been incarcerated for over a year and a half, yet no direct offer or meaningful negotiations have come from the government. She asserted that if there had been any genuine "backdoor deal" or negotiations, Imran Khan would have engaged with them, but so far, that hasn't been the case.
She further criticized the lack of seriousness from the government in dealing with PTI's demands, highlighting that Imran Khan had only made two demands for negotiations — one being the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9. According to Aleema, these demands have been ignored for two years, and now there are calls for him to accept house arrest instead.
"The founder of PTI has always stood for the rule of law, and after keeping him in jail for so long, are they now going to put him under house arrest?" Aleema Khan said. "This is a clear attempt to silence him. He was even told to keep quiet and not speak."
She specifically mentioned that Ali Amin Gandapur had brought the offer for Imran Khan to be placed under house arrest at Bani Gala, stating, "Yes, Ali Amin Gandapur brought it."
While discussing the broader negotiation process, Aleema Khan expressed doubts about the sincerity of the government's negotiating team. She questioned why a judicial commission, which PTI has demanded for years, has still not been formed under a senior and neutral judge.
"The judicial commission should be formed under a senior judge who is acceptable to everyone. This is the rule of law we’re talking about. PML-N members themselves are saying they will do whatever they are ordered to do. But judicial commissions should be formed within the framework of democracy and rule of law," she added.
In her remarks, Aleema Khan also called for the negotiations to proceed, stating that if the government was serious, the doors for talks were open, especially within the prison where Imran Khan is held. She questioned why the government's negotiation committee was not allowed to meet with PTI's representatives.
"The decision is up to the founder of PTI," she said. "If the committee is formed, something will happen. The people on the government's negotiation committee have stolen our mandate. The PTI founder said, ‘First show this seriousness, then we will discuss other demands.’"
Aleema Khan’s comments highlight the growing frustration within PTI over the perceived lack of genuine engagement from the government. Despite the ongoing discussions, the political deadlock continues, and the situation remains tense as both sides await further developments.
