Aleema Khanum, sister of Imran Khan, on Wednesday strongly criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leadership and the Islamabad High Court (IHC) over decisions regarding the former premier’s medical treatment and delays in hearing his pending cases.
The remarks come a day after Imran was taken for follow-up treatment of his eye ailment, which emerged publicly in late January. Aleema and the family have repeatedly raised concerns over the secrecy surrounding medical procedures and the exclusion of family members from the process.
Speaking to the media, Aleema emphasized that the family’s primary concern is the health of Imran Khan and insisted that no treatment should be conducted without their knowledge or consent. She questioned Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s statements from February 17, claiming that while the minister publicly confirmed treatment, no party leader could verify its nature.
Aleema stated that the family had recommended doctors — including Dr Asim, Dr Uzma Khan, and Dr Barki — for examination at Shifa International Hospital, but their recommendations were ignored. She alleged that the family only later learned that treatment had been carried out at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), without prior notification.
“We were demanding treatment at Shifa International Hospital. Instead, we were sent to jail when we raised the issue,” Aleema said, highlighting the pressure being exerted on government doctors. She added that the family would no longer raise concerns in private meetings but would speak publicly.
Aleema also criticized senior PTI lawyers and party office-bearers, including Hamid Khan, Ali Zafar, Latif Khosa, and Barrister Gohar, questioning why they were not actively pursuing Imran’s cases. She lamented that information about medical arrangements was coming from Minister Naqvi rather than party representatives.
On the delay in hearings, Aleema noted that Imran had been attending court proceedings for 13 months, but cases were consistently delayed. She recalled an incident where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi tried to address Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Sarfraz Dogar in court but was ignored.
Senior lawyer Salman Akram Raja supported Aleema’s claims, stating that court orders granting weekly meetings with Imran for lawyers and family members were not implemented. He alleged that contempt petitions over non-compliance were ignored, and applications for medical examinations were not addressed. Raja warned that the party would approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan if relief was not granted.
KP Chief Minister Afridi also expressed frustration, saying his attempt to speak to the Chief Justice in open court went unheard. Barrister Salman Safdar added that if bail cases were not fixed for hearing, the matter would be escalated to the Supreme Court.
Following the complaints, the IHC administration scheduled an early hearing for Thursday.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023, serving a 14-year sentence at Adiala Jail in a £190 million corruption case, and was recently convicted in another case concerning state gifts. Opposition leaders have repeatedly protested outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan, demanding immediate scheduling of his cases and access to family visits.
