Amit Shah Chairs High-Level Security Meet Amid Regional Tensions

NEW DELHI: In the wake of heightened regional tensions, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah convened a crucial security review meeting via video conferencing on Wednesday, directing top state officials and security agencies to enhance preparedness and maintain peace across the country.

According to The Indian Express, the meeting was attended by the Lieutenant Governors of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Bengal, and a representative from the Sikkim government. Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, including the Union Home Secretary, Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director, and Directors General of the BSF and CISF, were also present.

“All states should make their preparations as per the guidelines issued for the mock drill,” Shah said. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the uninterrupted operation of essential services such as hospitals, emergency response teams, and essential supplies.

Amit Shah also urged states to take strict action against anti-national propaganda on social and other media platforms, instructing that swift coordination between state governments and central agencies be maintained. “Every effort should be made to maintain seamless communication and the security of vulnerable points should be further strengthened,” he added, stressing the need to stop fearmongering among citizens.

The Home Minister further advised states to place disaster response forces, civil defence, Home Guards, and the National Cadet Corps (NCC) on high alert. He advocated for increased public involvement through NGOs and citizen volunteers. Coordination between local administrations, the Army, and paramilitary forces should also be enhanced, Shah said.

In addition, paramilitary forces were instructed to bolster security at border outposts, especially along sensitive infiltration routes. An official said many personnel on leave had been recalled and briefed to implement contingency protocols with immediate effect.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), responsible for guarding India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan, has also been directed to intensify its patrol and surveillance operations.

This high-level meeting comes as part of India’s broader response to recent border escalations and regional instability, aiming to ensure national security and public confidence amid a volatile geopolitical landscape.
