ATC Issues Arrest Warrants for Gandapur, 3 PTI Leaders Over Lahore Protest

A Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and three other senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders. The warrants are linked to a protest held by the party on October 5, 2023, at Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore, which allegedly turned violent.

The court action follows a request by the Lahore police, who registered the case at Masti Gate Police Station. The additional PTI leaders named in the warrants include Hammad Azhar, Saeed Sindhu, and Shahbaz Ahmed.

The protest in question was part of PTI’s nationwide demand for the release of its jailed founder, Imran Khan. While party workers had gathered in Lahore, hundreds of PTI supporters and senior figures also convened at various spots in Islamabad, defying strict police blockades and road closures.

Clashes between police and protesters led to the arrest of more than 100 PTI members. During the unrest, reports emerged that Gandapur had gone “missing” after allegedly being detained. However, he reappeared a day later at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, where he addressed lawmakers about the events leading to his disappearance.

The administrative judge, Manzar Ali Gul, presided over today’s hearing, issuing the non-bailable warrants after determining that Gandapur and the others had failed to cooperate with the investigation. According to police statements, the accused leaders have not yet been formally investigated.

The development marks a significant escalation in the legal pressures faced by PTI’s top leadership as they continue to rally support amid political and judicial challenges.
