Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa Begins Chamber Work Before Retirement

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has commenced chamber work ahead of his retirement, scheduled for October 25, according to sources. During this period, Justice Isa is expected to focus on writing judgments before stepping down from his role as the top judge.

Following Justice Isa’s move to chamber work, the bench of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, the senior puisne judge, has been shifted to Courtroom No. 1, signifying his position as the likely successor under the seniority principle.

The official process for the appointment of the next CJP is currently underway. Today, the Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC) is set to meet to nominate the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. The committee will consider three senior Supreme Court judges—Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, and Justice Yahya Afridi—for the role.

The parliamentary committee, formed under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, is tasked with selecting the CJP from the top three senior-most judges, marking a significant change from the previous method of appointment by seniority alone.

The SPC’s decision will be forwarded to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who will then submit the nomination to President Asif Ali Zardari for formal approval.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa, a prominent figure in Pakistan's judiciary, leaves behind a legacy of landmark judgments and notable reforms. His departure marks a crucial turning point for the judiciary as the country awaits the appointment of its next Chief Justice.
