Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi held an hour-long meeting with a six-member delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at the Supreme Court, during which judicial reforms, property rights, and constitutional amendments were discussed.

The CJP briefed the delegation on the ongoing judicial reforms and the role of the National Judicial Policy-Making Committee (NJPMC). He emphasized that the judiciary operates independently under the Constitution and highlighted efforts to improve judicial efficiency.

Judiciary's Role and IMF's Concerns
CJP Afridi informed the delegation that reforms were underway to protect property rights and expedite hearings in the high courts through the formation of dedicated benches. The delegation expressed its desire to safeguard foreign investments in Pakistan.

The CJP highlighted the need for incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance judicial processes. He assured the IMF team that the judiciary was committed to upholding agreements and legal obligations.

PTI Founder’s Case Under Article 184(3)
Responding to questions about the PTI founder's request, CJP Afridi stated that the matter falls under Clause 3 of Article 184 and has been referred to the constitutional committee for review. "This matter needs to be examined by the constitutional bench," he said.

Judicial Reforms and Internal Differences
CJP Afridi acknowledged ongoing differences within the judiciary, particularly regarding letters written by judges. He urged patience, stating that "old habits related to writing letters will gradually be fixed."

He emphasized the importance of allowing the judicial system to function without disruption and noted that steps were being taken to address concerns raised by judges.

Judicial Commission Updates
The CJP spoke about changes in the Judicial Commission, highlighting the importance of nominating competent judges. He expressed support for Justice Gul Hassan Aurangzeb’s appointment to the Supreme Court, citing his expertise in tax cases.

"The allegation of court packing is wrong; we need more judges in the judiciary," CJP Afridi stressed, adding that judicial reforms would remain a priority.

Upcoming NJPMC Meeting
The CJP announced an upcoming meeting of the NJPMC to discuss critical judicial reforms and address concerns about judicial accountability.
