Peshawar Issues High Alert: Hospitals Ordered to Brace for Congo Virus Ahead of Eid
Health authorities in Peshawar have officially placed all medical facilities on high alert as part of a proactive strategy to combat the Congo Virus (CCHF) before the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha season. Recognizing the virus as a severe and highly contagious threat, the provincial health department has issued a comprehensive advisory to all District Health Officers (DHOs) and Medical Teaching Institutions (MTIs).
Strict Clinical Protocols
To prevent the spread of the virus within healthcare settings, the following mandates have been established:
-
Mandatory PPE: It is now compulsory for all medical staff to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow rigorous infection control procedures when treating suspected patients.
-
Safe Sample Handling: To prevent lab-acquired infections, blood samples from suspected cases must be collected with extreme care and transported using triple-layer packaging while maintaining a strict cold chain.
-
Diagnostic Accuracy: Authorities have officially approved both PCR and ELISA tests for rapid and accurate diagnosis.
Monitoring and Reporting
Hospitals are required to maintain a seamless link with public health laboratories. Every suspected case must be reported alongside a completed investigation form and a sample sent for testing. For complex cases, healthcare providers have been directed to stay in constant communication with the Virology Department of the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Livestock Coordination
Beyond hospital walls, the advisory emphasizes the importance of tick control measures in livestock. Since animal-to-human transmission is the primary risk during the sacrificial season, curbing the tick population is being treated as a top priority to reduce the viral load in cattle markets.
