Proceedings in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding the issuance of contempt of court notices to the Prime Minister and federal ministers in the Dr. Aafia Siddiqui case have been temporarily halted due to administrative delays and procedural ambiguities.
According to court sources, the Registrar’s Office has not yet dispatched the contempt notices ordered by Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan, citing procedural complications. A note from the judge’s office, dated July 16, indicated that the case would be taken up on July 21. However, the case was not included in the weekly cause list, and no amended list was issued in time.
Officials within the Registrar’s Office clarified that a request had been sent to the competent authority for amending the roster to accommodate the hearing, but no response has been received so far. “We’re awaiting instructions before taking any further action,” said an official from the office.
Interestingly, sources pointed out that although the case was not formally scheduled, it was still heard and an order was issued, creating a legal dilemma. “How can we issue notices based on a court order when the case was not even listed officially?” a senior official questioned.
In an unusual twist, the Registrar’s Office is now seeking guidance from the competent authority on how to proceed. This has effectively stalled the implementation of the court’s directive, further delaying the legal proceedings.
It is worth noting that the IHC had earlier issued contempt of court notices to the Prime Minister and several federal ministers for allegedly failing to comply with court orders in relation to Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case. The notices instructed them to submit written replies within two weeks, but these notices have not yet been delivered.
As the legal and administrative wrangling continues, the next steps in the case remain uncertain, and the matter now hangs in limbo awaiting clarification from the court’s administration.
