WORLD NEWS

More than 20 women have come forward to report possible sexual assaults after the conviction of Chinese student Zhenhao Zou for raping 10 women, London’s Metropolitan Police revealed on Wednesday. Authorities fear he may be one of the most prolific sex offenders ever seen in the UK.
Zou, 28, who was found guilty on March 5, lured young Chinese women to his flat under the pretense of socializing or studying before drugging and assaulting them. His sentencing is scheduled for June 19.
A Global Trail of Abuse
After Zou’s conviction, police issued an international appeal, suspecting he may have targeted more than 50 women. So far, 23 potential victims from different parts of the world have contacted officers.
“The primary places where we believe offending may have occurred at this time appear to be here in London and over in China,” said Met Police Commander Kevin Southworth.
Although Zou previously studied in Belfast in 2017 before moving to London in 2019, no victims from Northern Ireland have come forward yet.
A Disturbing Pattern of Predation
During the trial, evidence showed that Zou filmed many of the assaults using hidden or handheld cameras. Of the 10 victims identified in court, only two have been named.
The jury found Zou guilty of 28 charges, including:
- 11 counts of rape (involving 10 victims)
- Three counts of voyeurism
- One count of false imprisonment
- Three counts of possessing butanediol (a sedative drug) with intent to commit sexual offences
- 10 counts of possession of extreme pornographic images
Alarming Global Statistics on Sexual Violence
According to a 2024 Unicef report, over 370 million girls and women worldwide have experienced rape or sexual assault before turning 18. The scale of Zou’s crimes further highlights the ongoing crisis of sexual violence, particularly against vulnerable women.
Further Investigations Underway
With Zou’s sentencing set for June 19, the Metropolitan Police are compiling new evidence to submit to prosecutors. Authorities continue urging potential victims to come forward as they investigate the full extent of his crimes.
