Court Acquits All Accused in Umm Rabab Chandio Family Murder Case

A model criminal court in Dadu has acquitted all the accused in the high-profile 2018 murder case involving the family of Umm Rabab Chandio, delivering a verdict that has reignited concerns over justice and the influence of feudal power structures in Sindh.

The court announced its reserved judgment after completing witness statements and hearing final arguments in previous proceedings. The case, which has spanned over eight years, pertains to the killing of Umm Rabab Chandio’s father, grandfather, and uncle in Mehar on January 17, 2018.

A total of eight individuals were nominated in the case, including two sitting members of the provincial assembly. Of the accused, four were in custody while the remaining four were out on bail during the trial.

Following the verdict, Umm Rabab expressed deep disappointment and disbelief at the outcome. She questioned how none of the accused were held accountable, including those who had remained in hiding for nearly three years.

“This decision is not just about my family,” she said, describing the case as part of a broader struggle of marginalized communities against entrenched feudal systems in Sindh.

She further alleged that extraordinary security measures, including the imposition of curfew in two districts, surrounded the announcement of the verdict. According to her, the outcome sends a troubling message about impunity and power dynamics in the region.

The case has drawn widespread attention over the years, symbolizing, for many, the challenges faced by victims seeking justice in cases involving influential figures. The acquittal is likely to fuel renewed debate over judicial processes, accountability, and the role of powerful local actors in Pakistan’s legal system.
