CTD Arrests Zainebiyoun Brigade Militant Linked to Sectarian Killings

Sindh’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) announced the arrest of a suspected militant associated with the banned Zainebiyoun Brigade (ZB), who was allegedly involved in several targeted sectarian killings across Karachi during 2023 and early 2024.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the CTD revealed that the suspect, identified as Syed Mohammed Moosa Rizvi alias Kamran, was apprehended during a targeted operation in the Soldier Bazaar area. The suspect had reportedly been evading arrest for an extended period and was actively funded by the outlawed group.

The Zainebiyoun Brigade was proscribed by Pakistan in June 2023 and has been designated a terrorist organization by the US State Department since 2019. Tensions with Iran in early 2024 led to the group's formal ban notification in Pakistan.

According to the CTD, Rizvi confessed to the targeted killing of Qari Khurram and injuring Mohammed Madani and Naveed Khan on September 5, 2023, in the Taimuria area over sectarian rivalry. He also admitted to gunning down Sher Khan in Mobina Town on September 20, 2023, and Janat Gul in Sachal on November 26, 2023.

Furthermore, Rizvi allegedly facilitated the killing of Syed Mohammed Abu Hashim in Samanabad on November 13, 2024.

“The suspect is an important operative of the Zainebiyoun Brigade and had remained directly or indirectly involved in multiple sectarian killings,” the CTD stated. It added that he regularly received funding from the group to carry out the acts of terror.

Prior cases of terror financing and sectarian violence had already been registered against Rizvi, and further investigation is now underway to trace his network and remaining associates.

Earlier this week, three terrorists from the banned Fitna al Khawarij group were also arrested by CTD and Sindh Rangers during a joint operation in Karachi. A previous CTD probe in 2023 revealed that two other suspects involved in 13 sectarian killings over six months were linked to the Zainebiyoun Brigade as well.

The CTD reiterated its commitment to dismantling all networks operating under banned outfits and urged the public to report any suspicious activity.
