Curfew Imposed in Bannu’s Hoveed as Forces Launch Anti-Terror Operation

Amid a surge in terrorist incidents and drone-based assaults in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police on Friday imposed a strict curfew in the Hoveed area of Bannu district as a joint search and targeted operation was launched by police and security forces.

The region has seen escalating violence in recent months, with repeated attacks in Bannu, Peshawar, Karak, Lakki Marwat, and Bajaur, many of which have specifically targeted law enforcement personnel. Bannu, in particular, has emerged as a hotspot of terrorist activity, witnessing deadly assaults including a drone attack on a police station in July — the fifth of its kind within a single month.

In a statement issued Friday, Bannu police spokesperson Khanzala Quraishi confirmed that the operation began at 5 a.m. and is based on "credible intelligence reports." The mission, she stated, aims to eliminate terrorist elements and restore long-term peace in the area.

The search operation is being conducted under the direction of Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan and supervised by District Police Officer Saleem Abbasi Kalachi. Authorities have fully cordoned off the Hoveed locality, and house-to-house searches are underway.

“In case of any suspicious activity or resistance, immediate and effective action is being taken so that terrorists do not get a chance to escape or hide,” the statement emphasized.

For the safety of civilians, a full curfew has been imposed in the area. Residents have been instructed to remain indoors, cooperate with authorities, and immediately report any suspicious persons or activities to local law enforcement.

The statement further warned that aiding or sheltering terrorists is a serious offense. “Strict legal action will be taken against anyone found helping terrorists in any form,” it read.

This latest crackdown follows a deadly attack last week in which a police constable was martyred and three officers were injured during an exchange of fire at a checkpoint in Bannu. Security forces responded swiftly, killing three terrorists on the spot.

In July, militants used a quadcopter to drop explosives on a police station in Miryan, Bannu — part of a disturbing trend of technologically sophisticated assaults in the region.

The imposition of curfews and search operations highlight the severe security challenges facing KP, especially as the province contends with a rising frequency of attacks following the collapse of the ceasefire between the Pakistani government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in late 2022.

Authorities remain on high alert as the threat landscape continues to evolve, with both ground-based ambushes and aerial attacks now part of militants’ tactics. Officials urge citizens to remain vigilant and support law enforcement efforts during this critical phase of counterterror operations.
