Cyclone ‘Shakhti’ Intensifies Into Severe Storm, PMD Warns of Rough Seas Near Sindh Coast

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday announced that cyclonic storm Shakhti over the Arabian Sea had further intensified into a “severe cyclonic storm” after moving westward during the last 12 hours.

According to the latest advisory, the storm is expected to continue moving west-southwest and reach the northwest and adjoining central-north Arabian Sea by October 5. It is then forecast to recurve east-northeastwards within the following 24 hours before gradually weakening.

Under the storm’s influence, wind-thunderstorms and light to moderate rain are expected in Sindh’s Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, and Jamshoro districts, as well as in Balochistan’s Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, and Kech districts. Isolated showers may also occur in Karachi Division.

The PMD warned that sea conditions would remain “rough to very rough,” with squally winds gusting up to 55 km/h near the Sindh coast. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the deep sea until Sunday.

Sea conditions are projected to become “very rough to high” and even “very high” over the central and northern Arabian Sea during the next 36 hours, before moderating around the storm’s centre.

The PMD’s Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi is closely monitoring the system and will issue further updates. Meanwhile, global monitoring platforms such as Zoom Earth have also classified Shakhti as a “severe cyclonic storm,” recording wind speeds of 100 km/h as of 11am.

Former chief meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz explained that cyclones in the region are named according to a list maintained by a 13-country panel.

For Karachi, the PMD issued a separate alert stating that the storm was positioned about 390km south-southwest of the city and was likely to move further west-southward. The forecast predicted isolated drizzle on Saturday, partly cloudy and humid conditions on Sunday, and mostly sunny weather by Monday.

Authorities have urged coastal communities and fishermen to remain alert as the situation develops.
