An explosion during Friday prayers at a mosque in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, injured at least 54 people, authorities confirmed on Friday.
According to foreign media reports, the blast occurred at a school mosque in the city just as worshippers had gathered for the weekly congregational prayers.
Police said that all the injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, while emergency response teams and law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area. The cause of the explosion remains unclear, and authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.
“Law enforcement agencies have reached the site and an investigation is underway to determine the nature of the explosion,” a police spokesperson said.
An eyewitness, a school teacher present during the prayers, described the moment of panic:
“The sermon had just begun when a loud explosion shook the mosque. Students started running in all directions — many fell and were injured in the chaos.”
Local media footage showed emergency vehicles rushing to the scene as worshippers, some with visible injuries, were evacuated from the mosque premises.
Police have not yet confirmed whether explosives were involved but stated that forensic teams are collecting evidence from the site.
Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has experienced sporadic incidents of explosions in the past, though officials have cautioned against jumping to conclusions before the investigation is complete.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information on social media while the investigation continues.
