Farmers Suffer Millions in Losses from Wheat Crop Fires in Punjab and Sindh

Farmers in multiple districts of Punjab and Sindh have suffered millions of rupees in losses following a series of fire incidents that devastated their wheat crops. The highest number of fires occurred in Lodhran, where 30 wheat crop fires were reported in just two weeks, highlighting the scale of the damage.

Other districts affected include Hafizabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Bahawalpur, and DG Khan, with about a dozen fire-related accidents reported. The Naushahro Feroze district of Sindh also saw two incidents. In total, these fires have caused significant financial strain on local farmers, who are now facing challenges to recover from the devastation.

Rescue officials point to the common practice of burning wheat residues as the primary cause of these fires, with the burning of leftover crop material igniting the standing wheat fields. Additionally, casual actions such as throwing burning cigarettes into the fields by passersby or fireworks from wedding processions have also been identified as contributing factors.

Experts have raised concerns about the ongoing issue, stressing that the enforcement of Section 144, which bans the burning of wheat residues, could be one of the most effective measures to prevent such fires. This regulation could help reduce the likelihood of these fires, thus safeguarding the crops and preventing further financial damage to farmers.

The loss of wheat crops is not only a blow to the farmers but also poses a threat to the region’s food supply and economic stability, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
