Federal Ministry of Interior Defends Ban on Social Media Platform X in Court

The Federal Ministry of Interior has justified its decision to ban the social media platform X, presenting its case before the Sindh High Court. The ministry cited national security concerns and the proliferation of hateful content targeting Pakistan's institutions as the primary reasons for the ban.

 

In its official response submitted to the court, the Ministry of Interior stated that the ban on X is a protective measure aimed at safeguarding national security and dignity. The ministry argued that this action does not violate the fundamental constitutional right of freedom of expression. Instead, it emphasized that Article 19 of the Constitution stipulates that freedom of expression is subject to the observance of laws.

 

The Ministry of Interior elaborated that all necessary legal procedures were followed before implementing the ban. It pointed out that X, as a foreign company, was repeatedly asked to comply with Pakistan's laws, including signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government. However, X did not agree to these terms.

 

Given the lack of compliance, the ministry contended that it had no option but to temporarily block access to the platform. The ministry urged the court to reject the petition challenging the ban, reinforcing its stance on prioritizing national security and adherence to legal standards.

 

This development follows increasing scrutiny of social media platforms and their role in disseminating content deemed harmful or destabilizing to national interests. The Ministry of Interior's defense underscores the government's commitment to regulating digital spaces in alignment with national security imperatives.
