Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday assured Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi of his “full support” in addressing all legitimate financial and economic issues faced by the province.
The meeting at the Finance Division comes a day after President Asif Ali Zardari chaired a high-level session in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and chief ministers of all provinces. Aurangzeb’s presence was notable given the political differences between his party, the PTI, and the ruling coalition.
In a social media post, the finance ministry described the meeting as held in a “cordial and constructive atmosphere,” noting that CM Afridi apprised the minister of various economic and financial challenges facing the province. Aurangzeb reportedly reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to facilitating provincial governments in resolving their financial issues.
Since assuming office in October last year, CM Afridi has repeatedly criticized the federal government for delays in releasing funds allocated to KP, especially those earmarked for the merged districts under the National Finance Commission (NFC).
Last week, the provincial government requested the Centre to revise the NFC resource distribution formula and, if necessary, provide discretionary grants to provinces pending a consensus on formula updates.
Earlier, in February, Afridi emphasized cooperation between the federal and provincial governments to ensure provinces receive their due shares. In January, he had also written to PM Shehbaz Sharif over the Centre’s “persistent failure” to release constitutionally guaranteed funds, demanding full and unconditional payment of all outstanding federal dues.
The meeting is seen as a step toward easing tensions between the KP government and the federal authorities and ensuring timely resolution of provincial financial concerns.
