Germany Arrests Five in Far-Right Terror Plot Targeting Migrants

German authorities have arrested five individuals accused of involvement in a far-right extremist group called “Last Wave of Defence,” which allegedly plotted violent attacks against asylum seekers, migrants, and political opponents. The arrests followed a series of arson attacks on a community center and refugee shelter.

Federal prosecutors revealed that four of the suspects face charges of membership in a domestic terrorist organization, while the fifth is accused of supporting the group. Two suspects are also charged with attempted murder and aggravated arson. Authorities searched 13 properties across Germany as part of the ongoing investigation.

Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig expressed shock that all those arrested were reportedly minors when the group was formed in or before April 2024. The group’s members viewed themselves as defenders of the “German nation,” aiming to undermine the democratic order.

Among the alleged attacks were an arson at a cultural center in eastern Germany in October and attempts to set fire to asylum seeker accommodations earlier this year, accompanied by hate slogans and neo-Nazi symbols.

The arrests come amid a surge in politically motivated crimes in Germany, particularly far-right violence, which rose sharply last year. Anti-immigrant sentiment has grown alongside the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government has also pushed for stricter immigration policies in response.

Authorities continue to investigate additional suspects linked to the group.
