Global Outage Caused by CrowdStrike Software Bug Disrupts Key Services

A defect in a content update from American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike has caused widespread disruptions for banks, airlines, telecommunication companies, TV and radio broadcasts, and supermarkets across several countries. The issue affected computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system globally, while Mac and Linux systems remained unaffected.

CrowdStrike issued a statement confirming the problem and emphasized that it was not a security incident or cyberattack. "The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed," the statement read. The company assured customers that it is actively working with those impacted by the defect.

The incident, referred to as the "Screen of Death" error, led to significant operational disruptions. In the United Kingdom, TV channel broadcasts, train services, and airport operations were affected. Australia's Melbourne Airport reported check-in delays due to the global technology problem, and flights were canceled in the US, Australia, and other countries.

In the Netherlands, airport operations were similarly affected, and manual passenger checks were implemented at Edinburgh Airport in the UK due to the malfunctioning of automatic boarding pass scanners. Airports in Prague, New Delhi, Mumbai, and various locations in Spain and Turkey also experienced disruptions. In the UAE, electronic systems were impacted, affecting operations at Dubai Airport's Terminal 1 and 2, although flight operations have since returned to normal.

CrowdStrike's statement advised organizations to communicate with their representatives through official channels and referred customers to the support portal for the latest updates. "Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers," the statement concluded.

Microsoft has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but its service status page currently indicates that all systems are operational. However, the company previously mentioned that users might face difficulties accessing Microsoft 365 services.

This event underscores the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures and rapid response protocols to manage and mitigate the impacts of such widespread technical issues.
