Government Considers Deal to Transfer Imran Khan to House Arrest Amid Political Standoff

The coalition government is reportedly considering shifting PTI Chairman Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to house arrest in Bani Gala, provided he abandons his current political stance and accepts the prevailing political system.

According to a report by senior investigative journalist Ansar Abbasi, the government remains firm on its stance regarding the May 9 events and is unwilling to compromise on serious charges against PTI leaders, including Khan. The current coalition government plans to continue its term until 2029.

Behind-the-Scenes Negotiations

A key member of the government coalition involved in the discussions, speaking anonymously to The News, revealed that the government has set no preconditions for talks but has outlined its position on major issues.

The source indicated that the government’s willingness to consider transferring Khan to house arrest depends on his acceptance of the current system and a cessation of "provocative politics." However, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government committee, denied that the proposal to shift Khan to Bani Gala had been formally discussed during committee meetings.

Diverging Demands

In the initial round of talks, PTI’s demands included the release of all political leaders and workers, particularly Imran Khan, and a pathway to return the PTI chairman to power. In contrast, the government reiterated its stance that there will be no compromise on the May 9 issue, emphasizing that all accused must face the judicial process.

The government also highlighted that during PTI’s tenure, political detainees were not released through executive orders but only through court decisions.

Charter of Consensus

The government committee, led by PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui, has indicated a preference for focusing discussions on broader political reforms rather than individual cases. Proposed topics for consensus include:

  • A Charter of Economy.
  • Renewal of the Charter of Democracy.
  • A unified policy to combat terrorism.
  • Defining boundaries for political protests.

Siddiqui emphasized that these broader issues could provide a foundation for political stability in Pakistan.

Next Steps in Dialogue

PTI and government committees are scheduled to meet again on January 2, where PTI is expected to present its formal demands. While the government has signaled flexibility on some issues, the coalition remains steadfast that key legal cases, including those related to the May 9 events, must follow due judicial process.

The outcome of these talks could significantly impact the political landscape, with potential implications for future elections and governance dynamics.
