The federal government has approved an increase in the salaries and house rent allowances for high court judges. The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification on the matter, signed by acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani.
According to the new guidelines, the house rent allowance for high court judges has been increased from Rs65,000 to Rs350,000. This increase follows requests from the Islamabad High Court, which pointed out the rapid rise in housing rents in the capital city over recent years.
Additionally, the superior judicial allowance for judges has been raised from Rs342,431 to Rs1,090,000, a significant boost that will directly impact the overall salary of the judges. With the addition of the increased house rent and judicial allowance, the total salary of a high court judge is expected to surpass Rs2 million per month.
The notification also included instructions for the high courts to establish clear policies regarding official vehicles. These policies will cover the provision and maintenance of vehicles, including fuel, drivers, and travel between benches.
This salary hike comes at a time when the cost of living, especially in Islamabad, has escalated sharply. With inflation and the rising costs of housing and transportation, the increase in judicial allowances is seen as a necessary step to ensure that judges can perform their duties effectively without financial stress.
