POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

The Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Friday declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar and two other party members as proclaimed offenders in connection with a case related to the October 5, 2024 protest and arson incident.
The case was heard by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul, during which the police submitted a report stating that the accused — including Hammad Azhar and Rana Shahbaz Ahmed — had gone into hiding and that raids were being conducted to trace and arrest them.
On the basis of the report, the prosecution requested the court to officially declare the accused as proclaimed offenders, which the court accepted. The ATC then issued the ruling declaring both Hammad Azhar and Shahbaz Ahmed as absconders under anti-terror laws.
According to police, the case — which includes charges of arson and violence during protests — was registered in 2024 following unrest linked to PTI political demonstrations. The FIR names multiple party leaders, including Azhar and Ahmed, for their alleged involvement in damaging public and private property.
This development adds to the legal challenges faced by PTI leadership, as the party continues to grapple with cases and investigations stemming from its protest movements in the wake of political tensions across the country.
Authorities said efforts to apprehend the declared offenders will continue, and further legal action may be initiated in the event of non-compliance.
