Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Landslides and Floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Leaving 22 Dead

At least 22 individuals, including 10 from a single family, have died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following days of heavy rain that triggered landslides and flash flooding across the region on Tuesday.

The relentless downpour has wreaked havoc, causing widespread destruction. In the Bazikhel area of Darra Adam Khel, Kohat, ten family members, including women and children, perished when rainwater flooded the basement where they were sleeping. Rescue 1122 teams arrived to find the basement inundated, and despite efforts to pump out the water, no survivors were found.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reports additional casualties across the province, with deaths reported in Mansehra, Lower Chitral, Bajaur, Charsadda, Lower Dir, Haripur, and Hangu districts. The floods have also left several homes destroyed, particularly in the Golen Valley of Lower Chitral and the village of Reshun, leading to significant displacement.

In Mansehra, torrential rains led to the drowning of a woman and her son, with rescue efforts hampered by high water levels. Similar tragedies unfolded in Lower Dir and Bajaur, where mudslides and house collapses claimed more lives.

Tourists have been stranded in the Kaghan Valley after floodwaters washed away a crucial bridge. Local authorities are coordinating rescue and evacuation efforts, while hoteliers provide refuge to those affected.

Sindh province also reported three fatalities due to rain-related incidents, with victims succumbing to electrocution and lightning strikes.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to enhance coordination with provincial disaster authorities and expedite the restoration of damaged infrastructure. The NDMA continues to monitor and manage rescue operations to mitigate further losses.
