IHC adjourns £190 million case hearing on Salman Safdar’s request, next hearing scheduled for May 20.
The Islamabad High Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of the main appeals in the £190 million corruption case involving PTI founder Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi until May 20 after defence counsel Barrister Salman Safdar requested more time. The court accepted the request and described the next hearing as a final opportunity for the defence to present its arguments.
The appeals challenge the convictions handed down earlier this year by an accountability court, which sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and Bushra Bibi to seven years in the Al-Qadir Trust reference filed by NAB. The IHC bench, headed by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar, heard arguments from both sides during Thursday’s proceedings.
During the hearing, NAB prosecutors opposed the adjournment request, while PTI lawyers argued that meetings with Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi had not been taking place according to court orders, making legal consultations difficult. The defence also stated that formal powers of attorney for the main appeals were yet to be signed.
The court recently rejected pleas seeking suspension of the sentences, observing that the main appeals were already fixed for hearing and that the merits of the case could not be examined at the suspension stage.
The £190 million case is linked to allegations surrounding the Al-Qadir Trust and claims that repatriated funds from the UK were improperly used to benefit a property tycoon. Imran Khan has repeatedly denied all allegations, insisting neither he nor Bushra Bibi gained financially from the trust.
Separately, the FIA has also submitted a challan against the PTI founder and others in the prohibited funding case, adding further legal pressure on the former prime minister, who remains incarcerated in Adiala Jail.
