Seoul, South Korea: Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol remains defiant as he faces an attempt by authorities to arrest him over his brief imposition of martial law in December. Yoon, who was impeached by the opposition-controlled parliament on December 14, sent a message to his supporters on Wednesday, declaring his determination to fight back against the charges.
"I will fight until the end to protect this country together with you," Yoon wrote in a letter, which was sent to hundreds of his supporters gathered near his official residence. The letter, which was shared with Reuters by Yoon's lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, further revealed that Yoon had been following the protests and actions of his supporters via live streams.
The letter, however, has only intensified the political conflict, with the opposition Democratic Party accusing Yoon of inciting a violent clash. "As if trying to stage insurrection wasn’t enough, he is now inciting his supporters to an extreme clash," said Jo Seoung-lae, a spokesperson for the party.
The situation has escalated in recent days, with police engaging in physical confrontations with Yoon's supporters, who have blocked access to his residence in an effort to prevent his arrest. Police issued dispersal orders, but protesters resisted, leading to confrontations.
On December 3, Yoon's late-night announcement to impose martial law sparked national outrage. He stated that the move was necessary to break a political deadlock and eliminate "anti-state forces." This decision led to his impeachment and further polarized South Korean politics.
While the exact timing and method of Yoon's arrest remain uncertain, tensions are high as the country grapples with the fallout from this unprecedented political crisis. The involvement of the presidential security service, which has blocked investigators from accessing Yoon’s office and residence, raises questions about how the authorities will proceed.
South Korea now faces a critical juncture, with political stability hanging in the balance as Yoon and his supporters continue to resist the authorities' efforts to hold him accountable.
