POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, through his lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, has responded to recent claims made by the accountability court judge handling the Toshakhana case-II. The lawyer has dismissed the allegations and called for an immediate halt to the trial, terming it baseless.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, Faisal Chaudhry reiterated that there is no criminal element in the Toshakhana case-II and accused authorities of orchestrating false cases against Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi.
Imran Khan’s Response to Judge’s Remarks
Imran Khan refuted the judge’s assertion that he avoided appearing in court. “The trial never begins before 11:30 AM in the jail,” he said, adding that he had asked to be informed when his lawyers arrived but received no communication. According to Khan, the judge left without adequate notice.
Allegations of Political Victimization
Faisal Chaudhry accused the government of weaponizing legal processes to target political opponents. He criticized the military trials of civilians and raised concerns about human rights violations. "Excesses have been committed by allowing such trials. The founder of PTI has decided to escalate this matter to the international level," he added.
Detention Conditions
The lawyer detailed the harsh conditions Imran Khan has faced in Adiala Jail, including restricted communication, lack of TV access, and prolonged solitary confinement. “He was allowed to speak to his children only after five months and met his legal team just once in three months,” Chaudhry claimed.
Case Background and Court’s Remarks
The £190 million Toshakhana case decision was postponed for the third time yesterday due to the non-appearance of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and their legal representatives.
Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed, who arrived at Adiala Jail at 8:30 AM, stated that the decision was ready but could not be announced. Despite waiting for two hours and sending messages to the PTI founder, there was no response. The judge remarked that Bushra Bibi was also aware of the hearing but did not appear.
The court has now deferred the decision to Friday, January 17. Earlier, the verdict was scheduled for December 23, January 6, and January 13 but faced delays due to similar circumstances.
