Imran Khan on Monday underwent a third eye procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) as part of his ongoing treatment for a serious vision condition.
According to a statement issued by the hospital, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder was administered a third dose of an anti-VEGF intra-vitreal injection. Medical officials confirmed that he remained vitally stable before, during, and after the procedure.
A senior doctor familiar with the case said the former premier was brought to the hospital as the third injection in the treatment cycle had become due. After obtaining informed consent and following standard medical protocols, the injection was administered in the operation theatre under microscopic guidance.
Following the procedure, Imran Khan was kept under observation for a short period to ensure stability before being shifted back to Adiala Jail.
Medical experts indicated that typically three injections are administered in such cases. However, the effectiveness of the treatment will be evaluated after four weeks to determine whether an additional dose may be required.
Imran Khan has been undergoing treatment for Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a condition that affects blood flow in the retina and can lead to vision loss. His ailment first came to light in late January, when he underwent his initial procedure on January 24.
Subsequent treatments included a follow-up examination at Adiala Jail by a five-member medical team on February 15, followed by a second injection administered at PIMS on February 24.
Earlier, his legal counsel Salman Safdar informed the Supreme Court that the former prime minister had experienced significant vision loss in his right eye while in custody.
The situation has sparked political controversy, with opposition leaders accusing the government of lacking transparency and failing to provide adequate medical care, including restricting access to his personal physicians. The government, however, has rejected these allegations.
The latest procedure marks another step in the ongoing medical management of Imran Khan’s condition, with further evaluation expected in the coming weeks.
