India and Taliban Discuss Trade and Economic Relations, Focus on Chabahar Port

Dubai: In a noteworthy diplomatic meeting, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met in Dubai on Wednesday, marking the first meeting between Indian and Taliban officials since 2021.

The Afghan Foreign Ministry confirmed that the talks centered around expanding and strengthening bilateral relations, with a particular focus on enhancing economic cooperation. India emphasized the importance of promoting trade through the Chabahar port in Iran as a strategic route, bypassing Pakistan’s ports of Karachi and Gwadar.

In a statement, the Afghan Foreign Ministry reiterated that Kabul's foreign policy is geared towards bolstering economic ties, and the Islamic Emirate (Taliban) aims to forge stronger partnerships with key regional players like India.

Despite this growing engagement, the Taliban's government has yet to receive official recognition from any foreign government, including India. However, China and Russia have shown interest in engaging in trade and investment with Afghanistan.

This development highlights the ongoing geopolitical shift and economic ambitions of Afghanistan, as it seeks to strengthen ties with regional powers like India while navigating the complexities of international diplomacy.
