Prominent Indian defense analyst Praveen Sawhney has cast doubt on recent claims by Indian Air Chief Marshal AP Singh that the Indian Air Force destroyed multiple Pakistani aircraft during a brief but intense conflict earlier this year.
Speaking to media, Sawhney said the Air Chief failed to provide any evidence for his assertion and noted that the claim was absent from the Air Force’s official press release. He questioned the credibility of the statement, asking: “How is it possible that India targeted an F-16 aircraft in the air or in the hangar, and the world did not know for three months?”
Sawhney further pointed out that the Indian Air Chief has yet to specify which Pakistani aircraft were allegedly destroyed.
In his speech, Air Chief Marshal Singh had claimed that in the four-day conflict — which he described as a “global defeat for India’s adversaries” — the Indian Air Force destroyed six aircraft, including five Pakistani fighter jets, by targeting airfields and striking planes parked on the ground.
The analyst criticized the timing and vagueness of the announcement, saying such claims, made without supporting proof months after the events, raise questions about the professionalism of the Air Force.
By contrast, Pakistan swiftly released details of its own aerial victories from the May 7 air war, including the downing of Indian Rafale jets, a claim that was also echoed in sections of the Indian media. Pakistan further claimed that its Air Force had intercepted and recorded Indian cockpit communications during the engagements.
The absence of corroborating evidence for the Indian Air Chief’s statements has sparked debate among defense observers and media analysts on both sides of the border.
