Indian CM Refuses to Resign After Election Defeat to Modi’s BJP

An Indian chief minister has declined to resign after suffering a major electoral defeat in state elections won by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to Reuters, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated that she has “not been defeated” and will continue in office despite her party losing the election.

The BJP secured a decisive victory, winning more than two-thirds of the 294 seats in the state assembly, marking a significant political shift in West Bengal, where the TMC had governed since 2011.

Banerjee also alleged that around 100 seats were “forcibly taken” from her party and raised concerns about bias in the electoral process, although she did not provide concrete evidence.

The BJP has rejected these claims and insisted that the elections were conducted fairly under constitutional procedures. The situation has sparked political debate, with opposition leaders and analysts warning about increasing tensions in Indian state politics following the result.

The controversy continues as the formal transition process is expected to proceed after the end of the current assembly term.
