Indian Nationals Killed in Russian-Ukrainian War, India Urges Repatriation and Recruitment Halts

The Indian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that two Indian nationals, recruited by the Russian army, were recently killed in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Indian embassy in Moscow has been actively engaging with Russian authorities, including the Ministry of Defense, to expedite the repatriation of the deceased individuals' remains.

In a statement, the foreign ministry also called on Russian authorities, both in Moscow and New Delhi, to promptly release and return all Indian nationals serving with the Russian army. India has demanded a verified cessation of any further recruitment of its citizens by the Russian army and cautioned Indian nationals against seeking employment opportunities in Russia without due diligence.

The move comes after Indian police arrested four individuals in May suspected of involvement in a human trafficking network. The network allegedly deceived young Indian men with promises of lucrative jobs or university placements in Russia, only to coerce them into fighting in the war in Ukraine. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed that approximately 35 Indian men fell victim to this scheme.

Despite the longstanding close relationship between India and Russia, New Delhi has refrained from condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine. Instead, India has advocated for an end to the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing the importance of peaceful resolution.
