Iran and the United States will hold their fifth round of negotiations in Rome, mediated by Oman, focusing on Tehran’s nuclear program and the possibility of a new deal. The talks aim to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while easing international sanctions.
However, progress remains stalled amid uncompromising positions, particularly on Iran’s uranium enrichment. Iran has increased enrichment to nearly 60%, a level far above civilian needs but below the 90% required for weapons. US envoy Steve Witkoff insists Iran must halt all enrichment, a “red line” Tehran rejects as excessive.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called the US demands “outrageous” and expressed skepticism over the talks’ success. Meanwhile, Washington has imposed new sanctions on Iran’s construction sector, which Tehran condemned as “vicious and illegal.”
The stakes are high: the US seeks to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and triggering a regional arms race, while Iran insists its program is peaceful and demands relief from crippling sanctions.
After President Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 JCPOA agreement in 2018 and intensified sanctions, tensions have fluctuated. Talks resumed in April, but uranium enrichment remains a sticking point.
The potential fallout of failed talks is severe, with Trump warning of military action, and Israel strongly opposing any nuclear capability for Iran. Tehran has warned Washington of legal consequences should Israel attack its nuclear facilities.
