Iran lashed out at the United States on Friday over the latest sanctions targeting its oil sector. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a stern warning against engaging in talks with Washington, dismissing negotiations as “not smart, wise, or honorable.”
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the US decision as "illegitimate and unlawful," accusing Washington of obstructing Iran’s legitimate trade.
“The US is responsible for the repercussions of such unilateral and bullying actions,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Khamenei’s Strong Stance
Speaking on Friday, Ayatollah Khamenei underscored Iran’s past experience with US diplomacy.
“Negotiating with America is neither smart, wise, nor honorable,” Khamenei asserted. “We made concessions in the past, and they tore up agreements.”
He added a warning: “If the US threatens Iran’s security, we will threaten theirs.”
US Raises Pressure
The sanctions, announced Thursday, are the first new measures since Donald Trump returned to the White House. They target Iranian firms, individuals, and tankers involved in shipping Iranian crude oil to China.
Trump has vowed to cut Iran’s oil exports to zero as part of efforts to halt Tehran’s nuclear program. During his previous term, Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear pact and reimposed harsh sanctions, prompting Iran to violate the deal's limitations.
European Mediation Efforts Continue
Diplomatic talks between Germany, France, and the United Kingdom with Tehran have sought to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iran has shown openness to resolving disputes but insists on the removal of sanctions.
Iran's Response to Sanctions
Iran has long rejected US efforts to stifle its oil exports, labeling them as “piracy.”
Despite the current diplomatic impasse, Tehran remains defiant. As the region watches developments, tensions between the two nations continue to simmer.
